On Saturday 6th April, Sutherland Hockey Club unveiled their 2024 senior men and women’s teams. Both sporting a new line up to previous seasons, coaches Pete Tait (PL1 men) and Craig Turner (Sutho1 women) led their teams to victory in the first round.
PL1 men defeated the strength of UNSW with a resounding 8 – 1 triumph. Sutho1 women defeated the young and skilful GNS with a 1 – 0 win, scoring in the dying seconds of the final buzzer. Outstanding performances from Aaron Kewshaw and the firepower of Hannah McClung, clinched them best-and-fairest for the first round. After tasting initial success, Suthos’ premier men’s and women’s teams will be eager to continue this winning streak and gain early points to set up their campaigns.
Across the grades, there are a number of families that play/contribute within the club, and even play within the same team. It’s a family affair in the women’s Sutho2 team, with the Cherries, Murphy and Burne families making up half the team. There are so many amazing “sutho families” within the club that contribute to the club through playing, umpiring, managing, coaching, volunteering, the list goes on.
It was great to see so many happy faces at hockey over the weekend. Being part of Sutho includes social functions, canteen duty, friends & family coming together and cheering/ heckling from Sutho Hill. Bring on the 2024 season!
